DIE FRAU ALS GÖNNERIN

DIE FRAU ALS GÖNNERIN

Kulturvermittlung, Repräsentation und (weibliche) Fördernetzwerke in Habsburger Gebieten der Frühen Neuzeit

Lilla Krász & Brigitta Pesti (Hrg). Wien: Praesens, 2023.

The volume explores the diverse processes of cultural, religious and social patronage of women from different geographical regions of the Habsburg Empire, of different social status and position, belonging to different religious denominations. In the centuries of the Middle Ages and the early Baroque, structural changes occurred within the realm of the patronage culture unilaterally linked to aristocratic men in the 17th and 18th centuries: new, social, class-specific interests and motivations appeared, financing and collection activities were less and less tied to social order and rank, places, individuals, families or genders. In addition to the increasing social, religious and regional diversification in the field of patronage, the increasing importance of female actors was becoming clearly discernible. The studies in the volume present the spectacular and growing roles of women of different social status and position, belonging to different religious denominations in the emerging cultural public of early modern Central Europe as far as the various fields of cultural, religious and social patronage are concerned.
