\u00a0In the volume, the historical transformations of authoritative knowledge surrounding childbirth are presented over a period of approximately three centuries \u2014 from the 16th century to the onset of the medicalization and professionalization of obstetrics in the second half of the 18th century, initiated by Gerard van Swieten of the Medical Faculty in Vienna. The aim is to reconstruct collective knowledge based on Judeo-Christian values and acquired through seeing, hearing, reading, touching, and imitation, as well as other forms of knowledge specific to a given social class or historical period. These forms of knowledge enabled the transmission of practices and artifacts related to childbirth through words, texts, images, and objects. The text-image-object-based contextualization of the available heterogeneous sources allows for the planned volume to be used in a variety of ways in university teaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
